ICSI is an effective modern method of male infertility treatment. The procedure overcomes many of the barriers to fertilization and allows couples with little hope of achieving successful pregnancy to obtain fertilized embryos.
The procedure is done under a microscope using multiple micromanipulation devices. This procedure requires highly developed skills. The process is carried out by our highly trained and licensed embryologists, using the very best in infertility treatment.
ICSI is considered absolutely necessary is in the case of male factor infertility with an abnormal semen analysis. ICSI can be used in cases where the male's sperm count is extremely low, does not move normally, or if eggs have not fertilized normally in the past. As well in the cases of where cryopreserved oocytes are used. In addition, it is used for couples that have a low yield of eggs at egg retrieval. In this scenario, ICSI is being used to try to get a higher percentage of eggs fertilized than with conventional insemination of the eggs.
Because only one sperm is needed per egg, even very small numbers of sperm can work. This becomes especially important in males with azoospermia (the complete lack of sperm present in the ejaculate). In such cases, we can offer a procedure called testicular sperm extraction (TESA). In this procedure, a small amount of testis tissue is taken by biopsy.
The fertilization rate using our ICSI technique in the Medicover Fertility laboratory is exceptional (currently 80-90%). That is to say, on average for every ten eggs, 9 eggs will fertilize normally.
Embryos, which were obtained using this method, do not differ from those obtained in self- fertilized oocytes. Indications to use the ICSI are determined by a reproductologist after the partners’ medical examination. Many patients choose to undergo the ICSI procedure in order to maximize their success even when the procedure is not clearly indicated.
The procedure itself cannot cause genetic failures in the offspring. But infertile parents and their genetic load can affect the health of the future children. In this situation pre-implantation diagnostics allows to analyse a particular embryo for the presence of genetic or chromosomal abnormalities.
